Rocky Horror Picture Show live-ish on tv...

Watched the taped live Rocky Horror Picture Show this was ok. No where near the original. I found Reeve Carney (Riff Raff) was the best performance throughout and creepy enough to rival Richard O'Brien and Adam Lambert as Eddie stole the show just as Meatloaf did. Otherwise it was humdrum performance. At one point the camera pans to a hydraulic lift where you see Frank N Furter standing on it and it lowers to the ground whereas in the original you only see feet and are in suspense until the elevator drops fully and the doors open for the reveal of Frank N Furter. I found the whole thing lacked the creepy vibe and strangeness of the original. Most of the cast looked out of place especially as the costumes seemed to not know what era the show was supposed to be set was all over the place - 50s, 80s, 90s etc. I did love seeing the sets ie Casa Loma, Rosedale Cemetary, Cannon Theatre etc of my home town TO. Laverne Cox as Dr. Frank-N-Furter was lack luster. She sings great but lacked the sexiness of Tim Curry in the role. The singing and songs were great I can't argue with that! In fact Annaleigh Ashford's Columbia stood out from Christina Milian's mundane Magenta. Riff Raff and Magenta are my favs and in this version they seemed disconnected. They didn't even do the funky hand gestures from the original which I loved. Victoria Justice as Janet Weiss seemed to have walked off the set of Gossip Girl while Ryan McCartan's Brad seemed to have gotten lost from Save by the Bell! And well poor Rocky....Staz Nair wasn't any better than Peter Hinwood but they never get Rocky right anyway. Great songs, mediocre performances.

Somewhat enjoyable and somewhat disappointing.
