TV is better than film right now

Been catching up on many tv series/mini series that were dvr'd ie The Night Manager, Outlander etc

I have to mention Penny Dreadful. If you do not watch this show I ask, what is wrong with you? It's one of the most amazing pieces of tv to come along in a long long time.

He's the IMDB synopsis if you've never heard of this show: Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein and medium Vanessa Ives unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.

There are a lot more literary characters in the show than listed above such as Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll, Professor Abraham Van Helsing, Dr. Seward etc

In the episode called A Blade of Grass, I watched Ava Green (Vanessa) and Rory Kinnear (John/The Monster) - who are just two of the ensemble cast - spend over 45 min in a padded cell having a conversation and it was riveting. I'm not kidding. I could have watched those two for hours that's how fantastic the writing and the acting was. They blow me away on screen each time. Also in this episode was an OMG moment regarding John.

In the episode Ebb Tide, the same two actors were on for not even 5 mins and I was moved to tears by the scene. Don't get me wrong the other actors are very good too! Actor Christian Camargo who plays Dr. Alexander Sweet is so enchanting that you actually want him and Vanessa together despite knowing he'll be her fall into darkness.

Everything about this show is brilliant. Plus it easily falls into a social commentary on our times thinly disguised as things haven't changed that much - we fear what we don't know but still fascinated by it, still bully nor accept those different from us, experiment with things we do not fully understand and damn the consequences, gap between poor and rich widening, etc.

I'm waiting for then to announce it's renewal for a 4th season which I hope is forthcoming as I've heard the ratings for this show are average. Average is far from what this show's sheer brilliance on television!
