Beautiful Creatures

Was on the fence about seeing Beautiful Creatures. I hadn't read the YA novels and I wondered if it would just be another Twilight type saga. I was pleasantly surprised how much I actually enjoyed the story. First it is told by the 'male' lead character Ethan Cathat he didn't conrter Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) rather than the female Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert). I liked that Ethan was charming and not cliche typical southern boy. I also liked that Lena wasn't weak and she took time to process what was happening to her. Although I guess the ending (or what happens to Lena) part way though the movie there were a couple of things along the way I didn't see coming especially for Ethan and Macon Ravenwood (Jeremy Irons) and that was good.

I loved the secret arcane library under the town library with all the old witchcraft books and symbols and languages etc.I could spend hours in there.... I'm not sure I buy Ridley Duchannes (Emmy Rossum) as a 'dark' caster in terms of her character as she was always nice to Charlotte even at the end. Doesn't quite jive imho but they may explain it further in the books. I didn't like that they felt they had to call themselves 'casters' instead of witches but that's just me I think - writer's gimmick? I also wish they could have explored more of Lena's abilities but I think screen time limited that and the book would explore it more. I hope so. Part of me wanted Ethan to leave town and not remember Lena until after he'd gone to college and then make him come back to town later when he does remember rather than remember just as he's just leaving the town line.

I now want to read the novels. This story is much more fleshed out and unique and the characters more well rounded and not all is what it seems.

BTW Macon Ravenwood in his white smoking jacket from one of the early scenes at the plantation could win best dressed at the Oscars if he were to go lol but then again it's Jeremy Irons wearing it right!?! I kept think he was channeling his inner vampire aka Bill Nighy as Viktor in Underworld lol.
